Remember those amazing Soft Batch M&M cookies I shared a couple of weeks ago? Oh man, they were good. Perfectly thick and chewy with the perfect buttery flavor… They were so good that I thought it would be a shame not to share their deliciousness with others so I packaged them up in an easy to make Cookie Mix in a Jar with a free printable recipe card !

To assemble the mix layer these ingredients in this order in a quart size mason jar:

  • 2 cups all purpose flour, 2 teaspoons cornstarch, 1/4 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon baking soda, pinch of salt on the bottom layer followed by:
  • 3/4 cup light brown sugar, packed down firmly
  • 2/3 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • top off with M&Ms to fill the jar, about 3/4 cup
  • You HAVE to pack the flour and sugar layers down to fit everything in the jar, I recommend using something like a cocktail muddler to make sure you pack it flat.
  • Also, when measuring the flours, be sure to spoon the flour into the measuring cup so it doesn’t get packed down. Many people will take their measuring cup and scoop it right into the bag but then compresses the flour and alters the amount meant for the recipe.

I topped my mason jar off with a pretty red canning lid and some red velvet ribbon I had left over from Christmas!

Such an easy gift to give, don’t you think? I actually cooked up my second batch of this dough in little heart shaped ramekins for my husband last weekend-they needed to bake a little bit longer but were delicious topped with ice cream!

  1. So happy with how these came out. Thank you so much! Do you happen to have a mason jar recipe for peanut butter cookies or just a sugar cookie?

    1. Hi Gayle,
They will fit but you have to really pack everything down. I just did it in my kitchen to double check and I’ll update the blog post with some tips as it’s 4 years old. I packed everything down using a muddler (like of cocktails) if you don’t pack the flour and sugar layers they definitely won’t fit.

  2. I had the same problem Laura had. I cut my chocolate chips down to 1/2 cup and just poured in as many m&Ms that I could. I didn’t measure them. I did everything I could to tap down the flour but nothing worked for me. I am giving these a gifts tomorrow, I hope they taste okay when they make them up.

  3. Hi-beautiful but even when I firmly packed down the brown sugar, there was only room left for the 2/3 cup chocolate chips…no room for M&Ms. I used the 32 oz. (quart sized mason jar, the choc chips filled to the top. Suggestions?

  4. Thank you for the recipe, I am going to make up two of these, one for each of my grand daughters teachers. What a wonderful idea, with the red M&M’s and thank you for the printable tag. Bobbie

  5. Thanks for this idea…I am going to make one up to give to our new neighbors….
and probably make another batch for us! YUM! What a cute idea putting
them in the heart shaped ramekins.

    1. Just wondering if you were able to fit everything? Can I condense anything? Example maybe 1/12 cups flour instead of 2? Can’t fit my M&Ms!! Thanks. 🙂

      1. Hi Laura, I just saw your comment, I can’t remember everything about packing the jars but let me try to fit everything in a jar again to troubleshoot for you, I will get back to you soon okay? ~Melissa
