HOW THE CHALLENGE WORKS:
Home Organization 101 will continue for 14 weeks. Each Saturday, I will post a new “space” along with pictures of my finished space and share the process of how you can organize yours. You can take as long as you need, and once you are finished organizing your space, come back here to this post and link up your blog (with pictures) to share with all of us. If you do not have a blog, you can take pictures and share them on our Facebook group page (here).   Questions, ask away… Our facebook page is the best place to ask them.  Have fun!  Now lets get organized.

Week 8 – KIDS CLOSETS

This week we are concentrating on closets, and in particular, kids closets. If you do not have children, you should organize another closet in your home.  This is a pretty simple week so take it easy!

PROCESS

1. Take a pictures before you start.

2. Empty out the entire closet… on to the bed.

3. Vacuum or mop the floor and dust the shelves.

4. Now label 5 baskets/bins for sorting (fits now, bigger sizes, giveaway, other room, trash).

5. Sort through everything that was in the space. Only keep what your child wears now or will wear soon. Place clothes that do not fit yet into a rubbermaid tote or basket and place up high so your chid will not go through it and mess it up.  This is only sorting. You will organize next…

6. If you are going to use decorative baskets to organize the space, label them according to your childs needs. Mine are labeled: Dance, gymnastics, vacation, pajamas, and summer/winter (I have 2 tags on this basket and switch them out as the season changes). As I go shopping, I will place things that are not ready to be worn yet into that basket.  If you need labels, let me know and I will email them to you.

7. After you are finished sorting, take the “trash” to the curb, place the “giveaways” in a trash bag and put in you trunk, place the “other room” in the hallway until you are finished with the closet, and keep the final baskets (the clothes that your child will wear) by your side.  Its time to organize!!

8. Use baskets & bins to organize things that do not need to hang (Dont forget to use tags).  Use shoe organizers to keep shoes looking neat and in good shape. Color coordinate clothes.  They look much nicer that way. Separate by type of clothing. (Short sleeve, long sleeve, sweaters, jackets, etc.)

9. You’re finished. Now take a picture, then come back here to share with us… Link up your blog post or share your pictures with our facebook group.

MY DAUGHTERS CLOSET

I use a closet “doubler”(like this one) so my daughter can reach her clothes.  Of course it doubles closet space too!

A shoe organizer keeps those messy pile ups from happening at the bottom of the closet. If there is no free space, there are no pile ups!

I use this shoe organizer for flip flops. Her flip flops are all being used now and are in the mudroom. But this is where they are typically stored.  Any over the door shoe organizer works well.

Long sleeves go up top. Once it gets colder, I will switch the short sleeve to top and long sleeve to the bottom rack.

I used the same tags in my Linen Closet.

Using the same style/color hangers keeps it uniform looking and organized!

  1. I have four daughters. I use the shoe bins to hold each of their bathroom supplies in an “over the toilet” shelf system. Because we rent I was looking for something that wouldn’t hurt the wall so this one stands, and allowed for “visable but not cluttered” storage. The four bins stack well on the bottom shelf with enough space for a narrow trash can. Monogramed towels are stored on the shelf above the bins with a framed bathroom print on the top shelf. Immediately recognised your daughter’s shoe bins as what we’re using in our bathroom. 🙂

I love all of the colors in your daughter’s closet. I like the seasonal bin idea as well. Thanks for all of the ideas!

  3. g says:

Wow! Beautiful closet! Great post! Since i can’t sleep thought I’d fire off a few questions:
    1. What goes into your daughter’s dresser–assuming you have one? Socks, undergarments, only non-hangable items?
    2. Do you use top bin for current pajamas or future ones? Seems you’d want those easily reachable.
    3. Would you suggest we not use closet space for toy or other miscellaneoua storage?

Thank you so much! I truly appreciate your tips and respect your ideas and suggestions!

  4. Robyn Amott says:

Very cool! Love the coloured sorting boxes on the top shelf. Little tip for those double hang rails. If they hang too long replace the silver hook with some decorative ribbon, that way you can hang them at whatever height you want to best utilise the space underneath.

  5. rhonda says:

I had the same question as g….Do you also have a dresser? I love your closet, it is absolutely beautiful, but who hangs the clothes? I CAN NOT get my 7 year old to hang clothes but I am so tired of the cramped messy dresser. I think it is so much easier to see everything like what you have posted, but I would be the one doing all the maintenance. How does it work in your home? Again, beautiful work!

  6. Minimalist Reader says:

Your daughter has more clothing than all three of my kids combined! Thankfully, when you don’t have a lot, you don’t really have to organize.

  7. L.L. says:

I want to join. How do I grab a button?

    • Admin says:

If you just copy the button (right click and save to your computer)… then when you add it to your blog, just attach my blog address. Sorry my new blog took the code away from my buttons. I need to fix it. You can also use my blog button thats on the right side bar. It has the code you can copy and paste. 🙂

    Beautiful!

Though my struggle comes from fitting all that is needed in a closet that size or smaller for 2 girsl, ages 4 and 8, which are at very different stages. We don’t have as many clothes per kid (I HAVE to weed out because of hand me downs, etc…it is too nuts!) but Each gets a side of the closet, but we have to store out of season clothes in bins under the beds. Each has a plastic 2 drawers unit from Target that has: underwear, socks, undershirts in it. The unit is on wheels and works great for them to each do their own…when laundry comes up, even the 4 year old can put underwear away. Even with good intentions, putting stuff int he drawer for her is hit or miss.

We use the dresser which has 6 drawers: bottom drawers on each side: pjs for current season, Middle drawer: jeans and pants stored rolled up in rows in winter/shorts and knit stuff, and currently top drawer is play clothes so if they want to really have fun in the garden, etc, they know where to grab appropriate clothes from. This drawer is already transitioning for my oldest…she has special shirts in hers…school shirt easy to find for school spirit day, girl scout shirts, choir shirts, etc…anything that she might have to wear for a special reason and she shouldn’t just wear for whatever goes in her drawer (we have drawer dividers so she still has room on one side for 2 play outfits.

Just thought I would share in case there were others out with some situation-sharing rooms….love to hear other families’ solutions…over the summer the oldest will get her own room and we will then have the 2.5 year old sharing with 5 year old. 🙂

  9. Leighann says:

I have those same bins in my office and the kids’ rooms. I can’t get labels to stick to them. What did you use?

(And please e-mail me your label template, thanks!)

    • Admin says:

If you see my blog post, you can see that I attached what I used… (at the end of the post). Leighann, what is your email?

  10. Damian says:

If only my kids closets would look that nice!

  11. Colleen says:

love it Toni! so bright and pretty. I do the same thing with the seasonal bins. Makes it so much easier to throw things in there when they outgrow them too.

Don’t have any kids (yet), but I tackled my linen closet and linked it above. Thank you for the inspiration!

  14. Hello Web Admin, I noticed that your On-Page SEO is is missing a few factors, for one you do not use all three H tags in your post, also I notice that you are not using bold or italics properly in your SEO optimization. On-Page SEO means more now than ever since the new Google update: Panda. No longer are backlinks and simply pinging or sending out a RSS feed the key to getting Google PageRank or Alexa Rankings, You now NEED On-Page SEO. So what is good On-Page SEO?First your keyword must appear in the title. Then it must appear in the URL.You have to optimize your keyword and make sure that it has a nice keyword density of 3-5% in your article with relevant LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing). Then you should spread all H1,H2,H3 tags in your article.Your Keyword should appear in your first paragraph and in the last sentence of the page. You should have relevant usage of Bold and italics of your keyword. There should be one internal link to a page on your blog and you should have one image with an alt tag that has your keyword….wait there’s even more Now what if i told you there was a simple WordPress plugin that does all the On-Page SEO, and automatically for you? That’s right AUTOMATICALLY, just watch this 4minute video for more information at. Seo Plugin

Where is the shoe organizer from?

    • Jo says:

What brand is your pink & white striped shoe organizer? The one in the amazon link is made of a tissue like fabric that is not as durable.

  16. Anonymous says:

I seasonal bin idea was lovely…Its so colorful!

  17. Lindsay says:

Hi!!! just happened upon this post! love it!! where did you get the shoe boxes with the hearts? I would love those for my daughter’s closet =)

    thanks!

  18. Lesley C. says:

Does she also have a dresser? or no dresser? The only thing that doesn’t seem to have a spot in this large closet is underpants and socks….. do you just store those in a bin somewhere so that you can go without a dresser?

  19. dani says:

I know you are so busy! I love seeing pictures of your rooms though. I must be a visual learner and find your house an inspiration! Any chance we can see your older children’s closets? I understand teens may not want an invasion of privacy. Are they neat and organized like you? Thanks so much!

  20. ayana pitterson says:

I love the room. Would it be possible for you to email me the label template, triniaw1@gmail.com.

  21. Your kids closet looks great! My daughters share a closet, so it can be difficult to keep it organized — it gets very full! Plus, when the kids choose their own outfits for the next school day, they tend to knock their outfits off the hangers. I have to get them to pick them up — but it’s hard for them, since they have to stand on stepstools to reach their clothes.

  22. Heather Myatt says:

I loved your daughters closet so much that I did my daughter’s just like it and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!!! Now I just need to know if you could email me the template for the labels, that is only thing I have left to do. 🙂 Thanks so much for your inspiration! I LOVE your blog!! Heathermyatt@ymail.com

  23. Ronny says:

If you are searching for natural newborn outfits then don’t even think about going to the shops, you really should just go straight online because you’ll see a far greater selection which
you just cannot find in the shops
