Two days ago I put out my 4th of July decorations. I love patriotic and Americana home decor. It’s not something I keep up all year, but this time of celebration for our country is the perfect time to get my red, white, and blue on. <
A while back I made these rustic candle holders, and as I got them out I felt the itch to create something new for the house this year.
As I was browsing online for my recent Pier1 Outdoor Oasis party, I remembered seeing this striped long flag and thinking “hmmm, I bet I could make something like that”.
And, so I did. With my own spin, of course. For our front porch, I made a patriotic street number banner, and I’ve got the tutorial for you to make your own.
Here’s what I used:
(amazon affiliate links)
- Canvas (cut from a spare painters drop cloth)
- Blue painters tape
- Chevron Frog Tape
- Red, white, blue craft paint
- Carbon paper for tracing your street numbers if you’re not comfortable free-handing them. Stencils could also be used.
- White glue
- Two 12″ wooden dowels
- Four 1/2″ round dowel end caps
- Ultra hold Heat N Bond
- Rope or twine
I’ll keep the instructions simple & let most of the photos speak for themselves.
This project is so, so, so very easy. I finished mine in about an hour.
Let’s get started-
First, cut your canvas to the desired size. For me, I cut it to 11″ and didn’t even measure how long, just eyeballed it to about how long I wanted it.
For the rustic look, pull some of the threads on the side and it will fray nicely.
Mark off with your blue painters tape where you want the blue part of your banner to be, and paint it in with craft paint.
When the blue is dry, use your chevron Frog Tape for your vertical red stripes, and paint them in.
I don’t have any number stencils, so I printed my street numbers and traces them with carbon paper onto the blue.
They’re just visible enough to paint over with your white craft paint. If you’ve got a steady hand, you can even use a paint pen and free-hand the numbers.
Put a small bit of white glue in the dowel end caps, and attach them to the ends of each dowel.
One thing you need to make sure when placing your numbers is to make sure you leave enough room at the top so that you can fold the fabric over the dowel and not lose the tops of any of the numbers.
Flip your banner over, cut the Heat N Bond to size, and follow all package instructions for ironing.
Make sure you put the dowel in and fold the fabric over it before ironing the Heat N Bond.
Finally, tie a rope or ribbon at the top for hanging.
That’s it!

I love that banner, but I'm kinda lazy so I won't be making one. Actually, it's not laziness, it too much to do!
