Thrifted Glass Cloche Turned Vintage Snow Globe

Glass dome cheese platters and cloches are the perfect thrifted item for creating beautiful snow globes and winter displays.

I know, I know.....It's not even Thanksgiving and I'm already talking about Christmas projects.  The thing is, who has time to make Christmas decor in the middle of December?  I don't know about you, but I'm usually frantically buying and wrapping presents in the middle of baking cookies all while trying to find time to relax and enjoy the season.  This year, I'm going to try hard to get a few holiday projects knocked off the "To Do" list before December.

Today, I'm starting with a $5.00 thrifted glass dome cheese platter (cloche if you really want to get fancy) that I turned into a Christmas snow globe.  I'm sure you have seen these little platters at Goodwill and other thrift stores before.  I actually found three the day I bought mine.

SUPPLIES NEEDED TO MAKE SNOW GLOBE
Affiliate links have been used

- Glass Dome Cloche/Cheese Platter (Check thrift stores first)
- 4 inch bottle brush trees (Walmart has them for $.74 a piece)
- Toy Truck (Walmart has them for about $5.00)
- Elmer's craft bond spray adhesive
- Hot glue gun

You may remember the little red Mercury truck from last year.  I found it at Walmart in the toy section and had fun using it in my holiday decor.  This year, after finding the $5.00 glass and wood cheese platter at Goodwill I knew the truck would be perfect for making a winter snow globe.

I started by painting two coats of white chalk paint on the base of the cloche.

In order to limit the mess of snow flakes I spayed the bottom with Elmer's spray adhesive then sprinkled the flakes on top.  This way they stuck to the bottom instead of spilling all over the table.

After the "snow" was in place I cut down two 4 inch bottle brush trees, hot glued them to the wood then set the truck in place.  Easy, peasy.

Minus drying time, this project took all of 5 minutes to complete and less than $6.00 to make.  It's a quick and easy project that would make the perfect addition to your Holiday decor.

  1. Katie you created a mini wonderland in a few minutes and it looks amazing. I have a cloche, such a big word ;-) that's just been collecting dust and this would be perfect. I just need to find a bottom for it. Thank you so much for the idea

  3. Katie - what is the snow on the bottle brushes? Are the brushes already green at Walmart? So so so cute!!! I'm definitely doing this. Our house was built in the 50s and I'm really into doing decor that is a nod to the 50'-60's era.

    1. Carrie, the bottle brush trees are green and already covered in snow. Wal-Mart has them in multiple sizes and colors! They would make the perfect addition to your 50's style home and décor.

  6. This is so cute! And funny, because I recently made one similar to this myself. It's set in a high domed bell-jar, however, which really accentuates the trees. Brushed the trees with some white acrylic paint, covered the scenery with fake snow, and also made a little snowman in front of the car! So cute.

  8. I found a cloche on clearance at Hobby Lobby after I saw this post. Then I found another at Goodwill for $3.99, so now I think I'll make a spring scene for Easter. Thanks for the inspiration!
