DIY Summer Lemon Wreath
When it comes to summer wreaths, few are as bright and cheerful as this faux lemon summer wreath scented with lemon essential oil! It’s a quick and easy DIY that’ll only cost you a few dollars to make, but it’ll bring some summer fun into your home, even on the coldest winter day!
Spring is here, they said. The weather will be warm, they said. The sun will shine and flowers will bloom, they said. Clearly “they” have never lived in New England! So far it has been wet and chilly and nothing like a normal spring. In fact, “chilly” might be an understatement for the past couple of weeks, as I again started wearing my winter boots and at least 3 layers on top. I dream about hot summer days when I’ll be able to put on my shorts, t-shirt and flip-flops and relax under the sun with a glass of homemade lemonade. That is my paradise. Meanwhile, Greg will be entirely out of his comfort zone, sweating like a fountain, cursing the heat and wishing there would be only two seasons: spring and fall. LOL. To make my summer dream even better, I decided to bring a little hint of summer in our home by making a summer wreath with faux lemons and some lemon essential oil!
My wreath-making skills being what they are, I again chose something very easy. What I used for my summer wreath is a grapevine wreath form, a hot glue gun, a plastic boxwood garland, two baby’s-breath picks from Dollar Store and two bags of mixed-size plastic lemons I got from Michaels.
Here is a little hint for you: Dollar Store also sell lemons, but the bags I got from Michaels were only $4 each, as they were on sale and had 12 lemons in a pack. So if you want to DiY a lemon wreath, you might want to check your local crafts store before buying them from Dollar Store. Also please note the ones I bought were hard plastic lemons, not the Sytrofoam type.
As my wreath form was another Put & Take find, I didn’t have a choice in the color. It was a tad too light, and it wouldn’t look good if I left it bare, so I decided to spray paint it with Rust Oleum Hunter Green.
But this is entirely optional, and if you have a darker color grapevine wreath, I would suggest you to skip this step.
Once the paint dried, I started cutting the garland into manageable sizes…
…and hot glued those cut pieces on the wreath form. During this process, I made sure I left some random empty areas, as the plan was to place lemons in those empty areas.
After I was finished with the greenery, I started hot gluing the lemons in a random manner but still tried to keep the overall balance in the look.
Next, I pulled out the flower part from the picks…
…and hot glued them all over, again in a random manner.
With that, my summer wreath was finished. I wanted to hang the wreath on the chalkboard part of our DiY command center. But I didn’t want to use any ribbons or wreath hanger, as it would lose its full & lush look. Since our command center’s chalkboard part is metal, by hot gluing a bunch of magnets to the back of my summer wreath, I easily solved that problem.
And ta-daaa! Meet my lovely faux lemon summer wreath!

I can’t believe how easy that was. Even for me!
I also love the scent of it… so refreshing and uplifting!
“Those are plastic lemons! What scent?” you may think… and you might even think that I am losing it…which may happen in another 2 weeks if the weather stays chilly!Â đŸ˜€ Anyway… back to the scent, shall we?
To add the lemon scent, I put a few drops of lemon oil on a cottonball…
…and rubbed the plastic lemons with that cottonball.
Note: Essential oils can damage certain plastics. If you are unsure if your lemons are resistant to essential oils, test one of them by applying a small amount of oil and waiting a day or two. Do not use Styrofoam lemons or those made of thin, flimsy plastic.
Now my sweet, lemon-scented summer wreath is a delight for almost all my senses, and my summer dream is starting to seem more and more real đŸ™‚

Thank you so much, Sandra! The lemon scent is just wonderful and refreshing. I also have some left over faux lemons and I used them as vase fillers for the glass vase I had. Of course I rubbed those lemons also with lemon oil and now in our home it is as if you are walking in citrus orchard đŸ™‚
This is a lovely idea! Just so you know.. I would appreciate a little coolness down here in Palm Desert CA. When we arrived here the orange blossoms still had a week to go. Awesomeness., I noticed one of our trees had an orange on it. We cut it open to taste and it must have been a lemon,it was Sooo bitter we spit it out real fast!or maybe because home grown isn’t cultivated they just go sour like lemons. Anyway,it was really a shock! Lemons and oranges are in many yards,but I don’t know how good they are! But the wreath is very pretty!

Oh you are so lucky to have orange and lemon trees around you. In Turkey we make jam with the unripened oranges/lemons. It is one of my favorite jams in the world! I guess when we retire we’ll be moving somewhere warmer and so I can grow lemon and orange trees in the back yard đŸ˜‰

The orange you picked was probably an ornamental orange. I live in Tucson, Arizona and many of the orange trees used here are Seville oranges. They are very sour, if you’ve ever bought Seville orange marmalade you’ll know what I mean. Here they are used mostly for looks, and the lovely orange blossom scent in the spring.
To get sweet oranges you have to go to the nursery and buy specific types like navel or other sweet varieties. ?
Hi Leslie, was reading comments when I came upon yours. I lived in Tucson from 1950 to 1969 when my hubs got out of Air Force and we moved to CO. Springs for just 10 months. We moved back to Tucson in 1970 when our daughter was 7 weeks old. Lived with my Mom in her small 2 bdrm/1 bath house for 4 months til we bought a house close to base. Believe me not easy living in small house with 4 kids.
I can remember how much I always loved Spring with scent of oranges, especially by U of A where I went for one year after high school at Catalina. Was in first graduating class at Catalina on Pima.
In 2008b I took Greyhound bus from Grand Junction, CO, not something I would ever do again but wanted to go to 50th. reunion. Boy had Tucson grown like crazy since I’d been there in 1997 when my Mom died. Stayed with best friend from school and we had so much fun shopping and eating, lol I had taken out a loan so I could go and have some money to do whatever.
We’ll be visiting Tucson end of June to see oldest son and his two boys while they spend time with their Dad. Boys live in KY. Am really looking forward to seeing best friend again and maybe niece and brother who have lived in Tucson for long time .My brother worked with Sheriffs dept. in homicide dept. few years ago. They live out beyond Old Tucson. Sorry if I bugged you. Have great weekend.

This is such a great idea and doesn’t seem too expensive. I love it! We are moving from our beloved Hawaii to California in a little over a month. I can’t wait to go to places like Michaels and Hobby Lobby! We don’t have them here. I’ll be inspired to make so many things if I step foot in those stores. Hopefully it will help keep me from getting too homesick. Great job Handon!

đŸ˜‰ Thank you so much, Andi! No it is not expensive. When I go to Michaels / Hobby Lobby / Joanns I make sure I take their discount coupons with me. Only then or when they go in sale their prices seem to be reasonable to me. I find their weekly coupons on their online stores.
I hope your move will be easy on you. I remember us moving from country to country [which is pretty similar to moving from state to state here ;-)]. After all that packing I used to promise to myself that I wouldn’t buy a lot of things in the next place. And as was expected I was never able to keep that promise đŸ˜‰

Handan, where I live we have a lemon farm. I suspect that there are probably a lot of them in your country too. So this makes a lot of sense, it’s like you’re bringing your homeland to your new home. There is nothing quite like walking down the street or in the fields and being permeated by the scent of lemon and orange trees. I understand you perfectly. As for the heat, well I have to agree with Greg on that one… I wilt in the summertime. Beautifully done as always and I love the trick with the magnets.
Hello Mary, it is indeed bringing a little of my homeland to our new home. I was born in Antalya (the tourist city in the south of Turkey) and lived there until I was 3 years old. Then we moved to Izmir (nicknamed as foreign city since Izmir reminds everyone of Greece’s coast towns/cities and also it is the closest city to Greece by sea). I grew up in Izmir, but every summer we use to go to our summer home in Antalya for a month or so. On the road in between these two cities (the road goes along the Aegean coast) you’ll have sea view on one side and on the other side, pine forests at one stretch, then some olive orchards, then a lot of citrus orchards…be it lemon trees, orange trees or tangerine trees. I will never forget the scent that hangs in the air on that road.
Also Antalya’s “city flower/tree” is orange. It is like an insult if you don’t have some sort of citrus tree in your yard. LOL. Having lived there for about 1.5 years when I was in my twenties, I really got used to having citrus trees nearby. Hence even here (in CT) we have 2 lemon trees in our house. Of course as we have to take them in during winter, we bought dwarf ones, but still they do the job đŸ˜‰
Two lemon trees are better than none Handan. We must have been neighbors at one time. I was born in Mytilene, which is right across from Izmir. But I left at the age of 6. I still go back once in a while.
