Advent 2009

Pictures from Advent 2005

One of my favorite things about reading Martha Stewart's Living Magazine is seeing her monthly calendar.  I was glad they revived that a while back (it was out of the magazine for a while--jailtime?).  Even though a lot of the stuff on her calendar made me laugh (who labels storage bins and peruses seed catalogs on a schedule?), there was some comfort in knowing what Martha Stewart had planned for the month.  And planning is the first step to productivity, I'm sure of it.  So let's just get it out there: I'm not much of a planner as far as "what I should be doing" is concerned.  I'm more of a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants type of person/mother/wife.  I am very closely attuned to my whims.  Don't get me wrong; I love a clean house and I pay my bills on time, but I have been known to go to Old Navy to buy my children clothes and shoes so we could go to the zoo without wearing the pajamas they were dressed in.  And while spontaneity might add some spice to life, sometimes I crave a plan.  Order.  A list of things to do.  With the idea of mapping out the month, maybe we could find a rhythm to the holiday season that will make it memorable, but without TOO much pressure and with wiggle room for our personalities.  Enter Advent.

December 1st is right around the corner, so I've been scanning the blogosphere for advent ideas.  Here are my sources in one blog post, mostly for my own benefit.  I'm keen on doing an activity each day instead of scarfing a piece of candy or buying toys.  The idea is having experiences and making memories, which I totally dig.  I also like the idea of making a record of our fun, so there are some scrapbooking sources here, too.  This makes me excited for the month of December.  I'm thinking we'll incorporate lots of "true meaning of the season" activities.  Tomorrow we're going to brainstorm what we want to do as a family and I'll start making plans....

I don't know why, but this post from Stephmodo is related to Advent in my head--I guess the ideas for kid coupons

Any other ideas? Sources or activities that you've particularly loved? I'd love to hear them!

This is so fun Whit. I love it.
I was thinking today about doing an advent for myself. Or maybe I should do it for someone else, that would be more christlike.
